A bit of history

St Dunstan’s Church, where London Road meets Whitstable Road, dates from the 11th century and is Grade I listed. In 1174 Henry II stopped here to change into sackcloth before walking to Thomas Becket’s tomb, and Thomas More’s head lies in the Roper family vault beneath the church. The Westgate itself, built around 1380, is the last of Canterbury’s seven medieval city gates and is now a museum.
