Getting to the University of Kent
Hales Place is on the north side of Canterbury, close to the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus. If you would rather not walk, Stagecoach’s Uni2 bus runs from Hales Place through the campus and on to Canterbury bus station, with stops on Downs Road and by Tenterden Drive. The university describes the Uni2 as a 24-hour service, apart from Sundays, bank holidays, Christmas and the summer vacation. The 21 and 21A buses also link the estate with the city centre, passing St Dunstan’s Church and Westgate Towers.
Shops nearby
There is a small local shop on Tenterden Drive for everyday bits, and Kent Students’ Union runs two Co-op shops on campus, in the Plaza and in Park Wood. For a bigger shop, the Uni2 carries on into town and stops outside Sainsbury’s on Northgate.
A bit of history
Hales Place is named after the mansion of the Hales family, who bought the estate in 1675. Jesuits later ran it as St Mary’s College, the mansion was pulled down in 1928, and the council bought the land for housing in 1953. The small round Jesuit cemetery chapel, built of flint and brick, still stands and is Grade II listed.
