Climbing in Canterbury

Climbing in Canterbury comes down to one dedicated wall, Chimera’s bouldering centre near Canterbury East station. Kent Sport’s campus facilities at the University of Kent don’t include a climbing or bouldering wall, so that’s the only indoor wall in the city we could find. Fancy ropes? We’ve added one well-known wall in Folkestone, about 16 miles away. Places are ranked using their Google rating weighted by how many reviews they have. Student tip: bring your student ID, because Chimera offers student rates and runs student sessions.

    Chimera Climbing

Unit 1, Wincheap Industrial Estate, 22 Maynard RoadBest for: Beginner-friendly bouldering

Chimera is Canterbury's dedicated bouldering centre, about a ten-minute walk from Canterbury East station. No ropes, harnesses or knots, just lower walls over safety matting, so you don't need a climbing partner. First visit? No booking needed, just register and watch the induction video. Taster sessions help beginners, and students get their own sessions and rates.

    F51 Folkestone

Tontine St, FolkestoneBest for: Roped climbing day trip

Want ropes as well as bouldering? F51 in Folkestone, about 16 miles from Canterbury, calls itself home to the tallest climbing venue in the South East. There's a lead wall with slab and steep overhang sections, a speed wall with auto belays and a dedicated bouldering area. It's also a multi-storey skatepark, so bring your board.

Ranked by Google rating, weighted by the number of reviews so a place with a handful of five-star reviews does not jump the queue. We check the list every month and drop anywhere that has closed.
